Contrast
a question of hierarchy
optimum: 2 conditions
Study:
Contrast is a pure emphasis
It is the tool to create hierarchy. In fact, when there is contrast, there is always hierarchy.
Contrast exists as soon as we arrange, order, or distinguish.
A contrast starts after tension: which means,
a tiny little contrasting behavior in not considered a contrast, but instead tension, because it is not yet clear who reigns the game.
Contrasts happens through:
- size
- behavior
- position
- intensity
- weight
- power
- control
etc
Project:
Using the given aphorism:
"Contrast is what makes photography interesting" by Conrad Hall, a
typographic poster is produced.
Starting with a composed grid based off
of the golden ratio, exploring a way of
conveying the aphorism, and then finding
a balance between breaking the rules
and maintaining order.
Inspiration:
"All that is noble is in itself of a quiet nature, and appears to sleep until it is aroused and summoned forth by contrast."
- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
